For the vast majority of public records—including civil lawsuits, collection accounts, and evictions—the standard lookback window is seven years. This timeline is dictated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Even if you paid off an old debt or settled an issue with a previous landlord, that history will likely still show up if it occurred within this seven-year frame.

Cross-Referencing Criminal Databases

When looking into criminal backgrounds, extensive checks do not just stop at your current state. They cross-reference:
